In 1895, when colonial hunters had reduced the southern white rhinoceros to fewer than fifty individuals worldwide, the Natal colonial government proclaimed 96,000 hectares of Zululand thornveld and acacia savanna as a protected reserve.
That decision created what is now Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, the oldest proclaimed wildlife sanctuary in Africa, and launched the single most successful large-mammal rescue in conservation history. By the 1960s Operation Rhino had pioneered capture and translocation techniques that saved the species from extinction and repopulated reserves across the continent. Today more than 1,600 white rhino roam these valleys, alongside stable populations of black rhino, lion, leopard, elephant, and Cape buffalo.
The park straddles two distinct ecological zones separated by a corridor of human settlement. Hluhluwe in the north is characterized by hilly terrain, riverine forest, and dense thicket, while Imfolozi to the south offers open grassland plains and acacia woodland typical of classic African savanna. This diversity of habitat supports over 340 bird species and one of the highest large-predator densities in KwaZulu-Natal. The Black and White Umfolozi rivers carve through the southern section, creating seasonal floodplains that concentrate game during the dry winter months.
